Aims and Benefits of Yoga
The science of yoga is not solely about the physical poses (asanas) with which most people are familiar. It is a complete system that includes: proper exercise, proper breathing, proper relaxation, proper diet and positive thinking.
Proper Exercise: Yoga is less stressful and more rejuvenative on the body than the regular physical exercise one might get in a gym. Yoga asanas increase flexibility; lubricate joints, tendons and ligaments; tone and strengthen muscles; improve aerobic capacity; massage internal organs, and provide a complete detoxification of the body.
Proper Breathing: Through a variety of breathing exercises (pranayama) one is able to use their lungs to their maximum capacity, as well as provide profound levels of mental clarity and physical energy. The practice of deep yogic breathing oxygenates the blood, thus warding off disease.
